Nikon Coolpix L340 review

The Nikon Coolpix L340 is another low priced point and shoot digital camera being offered by Nikon. However, just like some of the other low priced cameras from Nikon, it too seems to be offering a great value for money.

It’s the best seller in the point and shoot camera segment for a reason, after all. One of the most highlighting features of the Nikon Coolpix L340 includes the 28x optical and 56x dynamic zoom, which is actually quite surprising to find in this price range.

There’s actually a lot more to what seems to be one of the best point and shoot digital cameras 2016, and we will be going through it below.

Sharp and clear pictures, HD video recording

Well, before you get your hopes high, let us be very clear with this. It isn’t a professional camera if you couldn’t already tell given the surprisingly low price.

However, if you aren’t expecting a professional camera at this price, the Nikon Coolpix L340 may not fail to please you. The sharp and clear pictures it takes apparently look much better than what most cameras in this price range offer.

Coming to video recording, it offers HD 720p quality. We know some might have liked it to be 1080p, but remember that at the end of the day, it’s a budget camera. However, that doesn’t mean the video quality disappoints. It seems pretty decent, and unless you’re expecting a lot, which you actually shouldn’t in this price range, you should be happy with it.

It goes an extra mile with the zoom

This is where the Nikon Coolpix L340 really surprises. The 28x optical zoom and 56x digital fine zoom is kind of phenomenal in this price range. In fact, the amazing zoom is what probably makes the product so popular and the best seller in its segment.

Furthermore, the 28x optical zoom, coupled with the 20.2MP CCD sensor also makes it great for outdoor use. If you’re used to taking pictures using your mobile, you’re probably going to love it, as the amazing zoom really opens up a whole new world while taking outdoor shots.

Some great fun features

Although you shouldn’t really expect any advanced or additional features given what it already offers for the price, you would be glad to know that it does come with a few great fun features. There are the six special effects that will allow you to do a lot more with your pictures, and the automatic mode that you will absolutely love if you’re a beginner at using digital cameras.

Then there’s also the Smart Portrait mode, allowing you to enhance the look of the pictures you take, as well as giving a warning when someone blinks while taking a picture, ensuring you don’t take a picture that’s anything less than perfect.

Innovative design

The design of the Nikon Coolpix L340 is a little similar to some of the high-end products on the market. However, what you would actually like is that it’s more compact than most other point and shoot cameras, and is also considerably lightweight.

The rubber grip also makes it very comfortable to hold and take shots. Although it may not seem like a big deal to you now, you would surely feel the difference while taking tens of pictures at a time.

The overall design of the Nikon Coolpix L340 is quite innovative and stylish. However, don’t expect much on the controls front. The controls mostly include the basic and essential buttons, while there’s also a button to manage exposure which is a surprise.

Battery life

Well, with so much to offer, the Nikon Coolpix L340 does have to make some compromises to be so affordably priced. One of them is that it doesn’t come with a rechargeable battery. So if you plan to use a rechargeable battery, you will have to buy it separately and that will add to the cost.

However, even the 4 AA alkaline batteries do a fairly decent job, offering an impressive battery life of 370 shots. Putting in some lithium cells will up that to a massive 960-shot run time.

Some downsides

As mentioned earlier, the Nikon Coolpix L340 does have to make some compromises to offer so much for such a low price. While we don’t think any of them is a deal breaker, we still think they are worth knowing about. So we are mentioning some of the downsides you may come across while using the camera.

  • Limited controls
  • Slightly slower speed while taking pictures with flash
  • Extra expense of AA batteries (they don’t seem to cost much, though)

A final word

With everything figured in, we think the Nikon Coolpix L340 does offer a great value for money. If you’re a beginner and want to get something that allows you to do much more than what most basic digital cameras offer without shelling out several hundred dollars, the Nikon Coolpix L340 is what you may want to consider.
